- When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
- Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
- Refrain:
- Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul. - My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! - For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul. - But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul! - And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
I have posted a contemporary version of the song by Jars of Clay. Please listen in and follow the song lyrics which I have posted here also.
I was thinking about the writer of this beautiful song Horatio G. Spafford. He wrote this song while on a ship that was near the spot in the sea where his four daughters had perished. I nearly did not survive the loss of my unborn daughter Rachel. I saw, first hand the grief that overwhelmed and nearly destroyed my brother and his wife when they lost their teenage daughter Sarah to a rare form of blood poisoning. Yet, in my heart, I know God never makes a mistake. I know Jesus is unfailing in His Love for us. Somehow, in all tragedy He makes light from darkness. We must never think He will fail us because He has told us many,many times, "The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding , will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Phillippians 4:7.
May all of you have a blessed and peaceful Sunday
God never gives us more than we are able to bear.

I love "It is Well With My Soul". I love the harmony at the end of the chorus. We sang this song a lot at my childhood church. It brings back so many memories.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this lovely post today.
Rhonda
This has always been one of my favorite songs especially after I learned of the history of when it was written. Thank you for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Charlotte
Thank you for the words to this song. I need to remember this promise often.
ReplyDeleteIt is in the hard times that I grow. I don't want them but they are necessary.
Thanks for a beautiful post.
I have recently been enjoying the new old hymns redone in a contemporary way. Lovely reminder of a classic!
ReplyDeleteI love this song.

Thank you for sharing your insights on a very special song!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this song. I don't think we sing it enough in churches anymore. Sadly the "next" generation won't know the meaning of it nor the story behind it.
Nice to meet you!
Be blessed, Joyce
Well, I guess I visited your blog all ready this week! I was in a state of panic a few minutes ago because your link didn't work. But Charlotte fixed it. So often we hear, sing and love a song without really knowing the history behind it. Thanks for sharing! This is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this song, and the history behind it. It has always been a favorite, though we don't sing it in church anymore.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed Sunday.
Thank you for sharing this song and recalling the history behind it. Tragedy does happen when we live in a fallen world...God does allow it in our lives....but He is always there for us to support and carry us. Romans 8:28!
ReplyDeleteMay we ALL be able to say, "It is well with my soul."
ReplyDeleteI love this song and miss singing it now. I also love the history behind it. Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder. We just lost our first grandchild through miscarriage. It hurts.
ReplyDeleteyour encouragement was great.
This is one of my favorite old hymns. Thank-you for posting it today.
