"R" is for Reading

What's on your reading list? I am rarely without a good read! I thought I would share some reading favorites for Ms. Jenny and all the terrific friends at Alphabe Thursday! "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. You would not have attended Catholic school unless you read this book from cover to cover! It was during the years I attended Catholic school that I learned to love reading! I could go on an adventure without leaving my home! I could dream about places on the other side of the world! I always excelled in reading!
Reading is a wonderful outlet. It expands your imagination and increases your vocabulary and knowledge of words and meanings. To broaden your reading skills read some poetry.

The Reading Mother
by
Strickland Gillilan

I had a mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea,
Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth,
"Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath.
I had a Mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.
I had a Mother who read me tales
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness blent with his final breath.
I had a Mother who read me the things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings--
Stories that stir with an upward touch,
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be--
I had a Mother who read to me.

This was a favorite poem and I read to my children all the while they were growing up.
A couple favorite kid books that my kids enjoyed in their younger days!

Another good childrens book!
My all time favorite read is the Holy Bible and I prefer the New American Standard edition. But I have a large assortment of bibles and I treasure each one. The word of God is a priceless wealth of information and you can apply it to everyday living. We have the bible on tape too. Narrated by Alexander Scourby and James Earl Jones.
I have an i phone but I am not much into the Kindle. I like an old fashioned page turning book I can hold in my hands! I am going to buy a few book shelves so I can organize my books and when I do I will take some photos. I want to thank google images for sharing these great images with me today.

Now stop by Jenny's place and visit some creative, talented, encouraging posts about the letter "R".

  1. Hi Anne ~~ You have a bunch of "R" reading material and story material also.

Mrs. Jim has a reading list. I like to read all of a series of light reading. Last finished were the Lucy Stone mysteries by Leslie Meier and I am now on the Monk series.

Yes, I read the Bible and other Chritian books and literature. Also some on writing and poetry are in my"R" read stack.

For years I have been reading a book containing all of the letters of Mark Twain from Europe until our library lost track of it.
Then just this February I found it on eBay and was able to purchase it for fifty cents ($0.50) plus 3.88 postage and two cents sals tax:

  2. I love your attitude when it comes to reading. I love reading and collecting books. I feel the same way about kindle. I would rather turn pages and smell the book than use a kindle.

  3. I love to read , can't wait to read to my grandson, well I read to him now but he does not really listen. I have just recieved a book called Grandmas magical stories. .
I am a great believer in the kindle app on my phone ipad and pc but I also love a book in the hand .
I do however think that they are a waste of resources if.only read once , I tend to pass on my novels as I can't read a book twice .
I have just cleared about 300 books out my Christian ones gone to church library other to friends and others who knows where they will end up.

  8. Great recommendations on books -- my favorites as well (did you read in Oprah Magazine about the creation of her library? fascinating). My sympathies to you in the loss of Reggie. How we love our critters.

  13. I am never without a book and now that I have an ipad, never ever without a book.

I didn't think I would like the electronic reader, but I have liked the ipad so much, I bought an additional smaller reader that I can stick in my bag so I ALWAYS have something to read.

I must say, however, there is nothing like a glass of wine and an evening by the fire with a real book. That is my idea of heaven!

We had books all over the house growing up and in our house with our own family-I see you and I share some favorites for our children as well. Some of my favorite memories with my little ones are holding them tightly and reading!

  20. I agree with you about the Kindle and iphone not having the same effect as turning literal pages! I'm reading one of Beverly Lewis's Amish stories, but like you, my all time favorite is the Bible!
