Donuts have been around since World War I. I am going to print the recipe here. Did you know that least number of donuts are sold in Denver, Colorado? Just a fun fact to share.
The Salvation Army started serving donuts and coffee to soldiers in France during WWI to make them feel more at home. It was a fund raising event and continues today. Here is the Salvation Army Dough Boy Donut Recipe:
- 7-1/2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup lard
- 8 eggs
- 3 large cans evaporated milk
- 3 large cans water
- 18 cups flour
- 18 teaspoons baking powder
- 7-1/2 teaspoons salt
- 8 teaspoons nutmeg
Cream sugar and lard together, beat eggs, add evaporated milk and water. Add liquid to creamed mixture. Mix flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg in large sieve and sift into other mixture. Add enough flour to make e stiff dough. Roll and cut. Five pounds of lard are required to fry the doughnuts. Yield: approximately 250 doughnuts-
What's your favorite, a cake donut, maybe some sprinkles added to it? A glazed, a French crueller? A filled long john! The possibilities are endless. Just remember to take a nice long walk tomorrow evening after munching your donut with your favorite cuppa joe or tea!

Our nearest Krispy Kreme is about 100 miles away from here. Bummer.

Today is free donut day over at Duncan Donuts. Free donut with the purchase of a drink. (just saw an ad on facebook, lol). Unfortunately for me, there's not a Duncan Donuts nor a Krispy Kreme near me. :(
Thanks for the recipe! Might have to try my hands at that. DH would love me forever!
What a fun post! I love donuts and would love to try the recipe.
Enjoy your weekend!
I had to run to the store today to pick up something for work. They were giving away free glazed donuts...one of my favs! I hadn't had a donut in such a long time. Yum! Fun post. Connie
Oh delish!!!
Hey...I saw you were able to comment and I removed the extra invite to my private blog BUT..I got to thinking... would that keep you from commenting again?
Please try when you get the chance.
If only there was a Krispy Kreme near us, but I would have to say old fashioned glazed donuts are my favorite. Perfect for dunking in coffee.

It's been many a year since I've eaten a donut, and I've never tried a Krispy Kreme. I bet they are delicious.

Oh those all look good, but those bright ones are so fun!
My favourite donut is the glazed from the Golden Delights bakery in Kalona, IA. Oh, they know how to make a donut! They ruined me from ever enjoying Krispy Kreme again.
A friend of mine is sending me a donut pan and I want to try making some without frying.
The Minnesota postcard is on its way!! :)
